First things first ... What do you want to do in the scuba industry? Make a few bob as a part time Scuba Instructor or do you want to still dive as a recreational diver but would like to get some form of gain out of it? Once you have determined what direction you want to move in, take the first step.
FIRST STEP :- If still open water one, get qualified to Advance Diver status.
SECOND STEP :- Get First Aid qualified.
THIRD STEP :- Rescue Diver qualified.
Once you have achieved this, you will have a good idea in what direction you want to head.
My personal thoughts on this subject is ... have fun doing what you love ... As soon as your hobby becomes a "means of income", there flies the passion out the window and it becomes just like any other f*** job!
My suggestion is to go for "DM" that is the direction I'm personally heading to. This way you can organizie your own dive trips, or assist leading dives for other instructors and all you do is make sure that the people under your supevision pay for your overheads. This way you'll get to dive for "free". You are enjoying your sport/hobby and it's not costing you a cent. Don't see "course fees" as "An expensive purchse" but rather as investing in yourself so that you may profit a little later down the line.
Hope my 2 cents worth will help.
